Open House a Success...Thank You!
A special thank you goes out to all who attended the National Weather Service (NWS) Open House on Wednesday, August 25th. Over 220 people came through our doors. While most were from Upper Michigan, we did meet with some from as far away Illinois, Iowa, Arkansas, Washington, and California.
This event was made possible by several of our staff members, friends, and family. Also helping us out this year was staff from the Gwinn Unit of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment (DNRE). There were several Smokey the Bear sightings through the afternoon, as DNRE members showed visitors the equipment that they use when managing fires that develop across Upper Michigan.
The weather did hold out for us. Even through west to northwest winds gusted over 20 mph through much of the afternoon hours, and temperatures hovered in the upper 50s to mid 60s, it did not interfere with any of the fun activities. Several interactive stations were set up inside the building, with booths spilling out into the parking lot. Some of the activities included a rip current ring toss, miniature golf, a small scale flood demonstration, cloud matching game, and a tornado model. Office tours were also given at the top and bottom of each hour.
The last Open House at the NWS office in Negaunee Township was held in 2007, with nearly the same attendance.
