Wednesday, November 17th, 2010, is GIS Day across the globe, and the Geographic Information Systems movement is on in full force throughout NOAA and in the National Weather Service. Whether you know it or not, you are likely using National Weather Service GIS products on a daily basis. Any time you check radar, you are using GIS. Anytime you click on a map to get a forecast...GIS. Watches, warnings, advisories...you guessed it...GIS. Please hover over the examples below for a brief description of how GIS is improving NWS services. Some Examples of GIS in the National Weather Service:

Using GIS software, precipitation reports are plotted and contoured with high resolution maps providing users a close estimate as to what fell at their location.

Severe weather warnings and advisories are issued as polygons with geographic reference so users such as television stations can plot these entities and provide very detailed warning decision making tools.

Radar data is referenced and placed in conjuction with important geographic features such as terrain, highways, cities, and counties.

Post event maps of storm damage are created using GIS software to provide detailed data and analysis of signficant events.
