The Marquette Water Safety and Recreation Expo 2013
The National Weather Service, the City of Marquette, and Michigan Sea Grant will be hosting a water safety and recreation expo at McCarty Cove on Friday August 16, 2013 from 11 am to 4 pm. We will set up a tent right on the beach so that beachgoers can easily access materials and demonstrations! Come join us for a day of fun! If the weather is cold and rainy, the event will be postponed to August 17, 2013 from 11 am to 4 pm.
*Learn about the different types of dangerous currents on the Great Lakes, where they form, how to identify them, and how to escape them. Curious about that current meter at Picnic Rocks? We'll have a display on that too! Visitors will also learn about the Recreational Beach Forecast produced by most Great Lakes National Weather Service offices-which offers a forecast of expected lake currents and waves. Using the NWS forecast before you go to the beach could prevent you from making an unnecessary trip, and will keep you aware of potentially hazardous conditions-such as rip currents or high waves.
*Ever wonder about the rescue equipment boxes seen on several Michigan Beaches? Demonstrations showing how to use the equipment will go on throughout the afternoon. This is a great opportunity to learn how to save a life!
*Have you ever wanted to try paddle boarding? What about Kayaking? The YMCA will be at the expo handing out information on the various classes at the Y on swimming and various water sports.
*Additional information on swimming classes offered at NMU will also be available.
Come on Out and Join Us!
