Cool and Wet with Above Normal Snow in 2013

Generally Cool and Wet with Above Normal Snowfall in 2013

Above normal precipitation was the rule across Upper Michigan in 2013...with many locations reporting a top 10 wettest calendar year. In fact...last year is now the wettest calendar year on record at Ironwood and Manistique. The 2013 precipitation total of 53.46 inches at Ironwood is almost 20 inches above and 150 percent of normal.

Since a good deal of this precipitation fell during the colder months...annual snowfall was also above average at most places in 2013 and the highest on record at Munising and Newberry...where the observed total of 222.7 inches is almost 170 percent of normal.

The observed annual average temperatures between about 37 and 42 degrees is about 1 to as much as 2.5 degrees below normal...enough to qualify 2013 as one of the top ten coolest on record at some locations.
