A very strong area of low pressure over Missouri lifted northeast into Illinois and Wisconsin Sunday, February 17th. Rain, freezing rain and snow fell over parts of eastern Nebraska and southwest Iowa. Warm air with the front assisted in melting much of the ice and snow that covered roads in southeast Nebraska and southwest Iowa. Heavy snow fell from around Des Moines (5.7") to Ottumwa (8.3"), to Cedar Rapids (6.5") to Solon near Iowa City (7.0") and near Dubuque (7.0). eastern Iowa and central Wisconsin were also hit hard by ice (.1-.50") and heavy snow (6-10"). This intense low pressure system also generated strong northwest winds with gusts from 39 to 53 mph across the local area.
