70 to 90 mph Winds Move Over the Omaha Metro Area

A powerful line of thunderstorms moved across the region Friday afternoon, June 27, 2008 and produced winds from 70 to 110 mph and widepsread wind damage.  Significant tree damage occurred in the area, along with major damage to homes and businesses.  Very large hail up to golf ball size was also reported as the line of storms moved through.  The Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) estimated that around 126,000 customers were without power at the peak of the storm late Friday afternoon and evening, and was the worst damage that we've seen since the snowstorm in October 1997.  Damage estimates from this storm could easily reach the millions. Straight-line thunderstorm winds this strong likely have not occurred in the Omaha metro area since July 5, 2003 when a strong storm moved through the area and produced winds up to 75 mph or higher.  By comparison, an estimated 60,000 people were without power during that storm.

Sadly, two people were killed in Council Bluffs when a tree fell on their vehicle and another individual received major injuries.  Three people were reported injured at Memorial Park waiting for a summer concert to begin. Countless other activies were cancelled due to widespread power outages.

Winds were measured at 77 mph as the storm passed over the NWS Office in Valley, but then our wind equipment failed.  A storm spotter measured 80 mph winds in Elkhorn.  The damage survey team estimates maximum wind speeds as high as 110 to 115 mph in a swath from near Woodcliff to north of Valley and Elkhorn, NE.
