Snowfall on February 13th, 2009

A quick moving winter storm moved through the region on Friday, February 13, 2009.  Snow developed across the area during the morning hours, with periods of heavy snow quickly developing in a very narrow region.  Snowfall then ended from northwest to southeast by mid to late afternoon. Strong winds were also noted across portions of southeast Nebraska with wind gusts from 35 to 40 mph at times, which caused some blowing and drifting of snow south of Lincoln.

Snowfall amounts ranged from no snow at all across portions of northeast Nebraska and northwest Iowa, to a corridor of 6 to 8 inches across east central Nebraska and west central Iowa, to 1 to 5 inches of snow across southeast Nebraska and southwest Iowa. (see first image below which lists automated and Cooperative Observer Reports)  The heavy snow band was in a very narrow, 35 mile wide corridor from about Columbus, spreading eastard toward Fremont, Omaha, and Council Bluffs.

Note, in the second image below, the location of the heavy snow band has been highlighted with yellow contours, which also includes CoCoRaHS reports as well.  The second image also has an early morning visible satellite image underlay from Saturday, Februarh 14th depicting the sharp snow/no snow boundary.  There was a very distinct snow/no snow boundary, with no snow at all along and north of a line from Neligh, Nebraska to Tekamah, Nebraska, to Onawa, Iowa.  The third image below is a visible satellite image taken mid morning on Saturday, February 14th, 2009.   This image clearly depicts the sharp northern and southern edge of the snow band (highlighted by blue contours), although clouds moving through western and central Nebraska make it difficult to fine the snow/no snow areas in those regions.

Tabular reports for the event are presented below the images,or a KML file is available for viewing in Geographical Information Software.
