Sunshine Sensors Will be Deactivated 10/1

The sunshine sensors at all NWS forecast offices, including Omaha/Valley NE, will be deactivated on October 1, 2009.

Beginning October 1, 2009, daily minutes of sunshine as reported in the supplementary climatological data message (SCD) and as reported in the daily climate report for Valley (CLIOAX) will be discontinued.

The Foster-Foskett sunshine switch sensor, which measures minutes of observed sunshine, is nearly 60 years old and has not gained enough priority to be funded.  Solar radiation data, considered to be more accurate and reliable, is available from NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) for the NCDC Climate Reference Network and the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory Surface Radiation Network.  These data can be found at the following web sites:
