Storm Summary from 9/13/10 - Damage Survey

During the afternoon and evening of September 13th, a supercell thunderstorm developed over southeast Nebraska.  On Tuesday, September 14th, NWS personnel conducted a damage survey.

The storm produced a swath of large hail and damaging winds that extended from Saunders County southeast to Richardson County.  The significant hail began in Saunders County with numerous reports of  ping pong to golfball sized hail and even some reports of baseball sized hail near Wahoo and south of Mead.   There also was hail damage to crops east of Ceresco.  Wind driven hail broke windows, and did significant damage to vehicles, siding, and roofs in Ithaca and near Mead.  As the storm moved southeast the winds strengthened with widespread wind damage.  80 mph winds were measured near Ashland by the Saunders/Cass County line.  80 to 90 mph winds were estimated at the I80/Greenwood exit where the roof was taken off a hotel .  Straightline damaging winds, mostly from 60 to 80 mph occurred from Ashland southeast through Cass and Otoe counties to Nemaha and Richardson counties.   Interviews with residents near Ithaca and Memphis reported strong northeast winds, however when the winds began to accelerate, they were from northwest, with the damage from northwest to southeast.   Along the path of the storm numerous very large trees were blown down, power poles were snapped, crops were flattened, and sheds were destroyed.  The most significant damage went through the communities of Ithaca, Murdock, Alvo,  Elmwood, Unadilla,  and Syracuse.
