Snow has fallen in the area in May before, though it sure is not very frequent. Here are all of the measured snowfalls in the official records for our area, updated to include the snow that fell on May 1-2, 2013.
Omaha (snowfall records 1884-2013, omitting 1996-97):
The snow on 5/1/2013 and 5/2/2013 set daily records on both dates. The combined total of 3.1 inches for May 1-2, 2013, is a record snowfall event in May as well as a record highest monthly snowfall total ever recorded in May. The old record highest daily snowfall of 2.0 inches, set in 1945, still stands.
Lincoln (snowfall records 1948-2013, omitting 1996):
The snow on 5/1/2013 and 5/2/2013 set daily records on both dates. The record snowfall in 1967 still stands as the highest daily snowfall in May as well as the highest monthly total snowfall in May.
Norfolk (snowfall records 1893-2013):
Only a trace of snow was recorded in Norfolk on May 1-2, 2013, and the previous records still stand.
The snow on May 1-2, 2013, was the first measurable May snowfall in 46 years in Omaha and Lincoln. Reports from other sides in the area will be added later today. All reports are considered preliminary.
