.OVERVIEW...

SEVERAL TORNADOES WERE SPAWNED IN ASSOCIATION WITH A LOW PRESSURE
SYSTEM THAT MOVED ACROSS THE CENTRAL PLAINS ON FRIDAY OCTOBER 4
2013. ADDITIONAL UPDATES FOR THIS EVENT ARE LIKELY AS ADDITIONAL
DETAILS MAY BECOME AVAILABLE IN THE NEXT FEW DAYS.

A TORNADO STARTED PRODUCING DAMAGE IN THURSTON COUNTY
APPROXIMATELY 3 MILES SOUTHWEST OF MACY IN RURAL AREAS...THEN
TRACKED NORTHEAST THROUGH MACY. THE TORNADO LOST SOME INTENSITY AS
IT TRACKED NORTHEAST FROM THE EDGE OF MACY ACROSS HIGHWAY 75 AND
HEADED TOWARD THE MISSOURI RIVER. IT APPEARS THAT THE TORNADO
CROSSED THE RIVER AND THEN IT CONTINUED TO PRODUCE DAMAGE IN
NORTHWEST MONONA COUNTY...NORTHWEST OF WHITING. THE DAMAGED
EXTENDED AT LEAST ONE MILE INTO WOODBURY COUNTY...WEST OF SLOAN.
DETAILS ON THE EXACT ENDING POINT OF THIS TORNADO WILL BECOME
AVAILABLE IN THE NEXT FEW DAYS AFTER ADDITIONAL COORDINATION WITH
EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT.

THE DAMAGE IN MACY VARIED IN WIDTH FROM 100 TO 250 YARDS WIDE. 6
HOMES WERE CONSIDERED TO HAVE RECEIVED HEAVY DAMAGE OR DESTROYED
AND CAN NOT BE OCCUPIED. 12 HOMES AND 1 BUSINESS RECEIVED AT LEAST
SOME DAMAGE. NUMEROUS VEHICLES WERE DAMAGED. THERE WERE 2 MINOR
INJURIES.

OUTSIDE OF MACY...THE MAJORITY OF THE DAMAGE WAS TO TREES BUT SOME
FARMSTEADS RECEIVED MINOR DAMAGE TO BUILDINGS. AT LEAST 4 POWER
POLES WERE BROKEN OFF IN MONONA COUNTY AND ONE CENTER PIVOT RECEIVED
DAMAGE.

MOST OF THE DAMAGE ALONG THE PATH OF THE TORNADO WAS OF EF0 OR EF1
INTENSITY WITH SPOTTY AREAS OF EF2 INTENSITY.

THE STORM SURVEY INVESTIGATION IS STILL ONGOING AND SUBJECT TO
FURTHER COORDINATION WITH LOCAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCIES.

INTO THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES:

EF0...WIND SPEEDS 65 TO 85 MPH.
EF1...WIND SPEEDS 86 TO 110 MPH.
EF2...WIND SPEEDS 111 TO 135 MPH.
EF3...WIND SPEEDS 136 TO 165 MPH.
EF4...WIND SPEEDS 166 TO 200 MPH.
EF5...WIND SPEEDS GREATER THAN 200 MPH.
