Review of severe storms in southern IL and southwest IN on Friday

During the late afternoon of Friday, June 27, clusters of strong to severe thunderstorms moved eastward from the St. Louis area across parts of southern Illinois. The Storm Prediction Center issued Severe Thunderstorm Watch 623 at 5:15 P.M. for southern Illinois, southwest Indiana, northwest Kentucky, and a few counties in southeast Missouri.

 WW0623 Radar

The storms organized into one or two short lines as they crossed southern Illinois. The lines accelerated as they crossed the Wabash River, and they exited southwest Indiana and northwest Kentucky around 9 P.M.

The initial severe weather reports in the Mount Vernon area were associated with a rotating storm that produced a funnel cloud and some large hail up to the size of quarters. Once the storms organized into a line, wind damage was observed at a number of locations along and north of a Carbondale to Harrisburg corridor. A number of trees were blown down by wind gusts from 60 to 70 mph. The reports were most numerous near Benton, Du Quoin, and Carbondale. A few weak structures such as barns and greenhouses were destroyed.

Wind gusts from 50 to 60 mph were observed at numerous locations in southwest Indiana. Some trees and power lines were brought down, resulting in sporadic power outages. A detailed preliminary report of wind damage, large hail, and flooding follows.
