Large damaging hail across southern Illinois late Thursday night

Supercell storm southern IL

Above is a 4 panel of reflectivity data from around 12:30 a.m. early Friday morning May 8th 2009. This storm is a classic supercell Thunderstorm that originated over southwest Illinois. You can see a "bounded weak echo region" in the upper right hand corner panel, indicative of very strong rotation within the storm. The persistent rotation helped to sustain the supercell storm, and allowed it to be an efficient large hail producer. Numerous reports of very large hail at least golf ball size were reported across both Jackson and Williamson counties. Hail was around 2 inches in diameter in some areas. There was a report of windows broken out of vehicles on the east side of Carbondale. The storms were somewhat "elevated" in nature, meaning while conditions were favorable for severe weather, parameters near the surface were not conducive for tornadoes. This long track storm came together in extreme southeast Randolph County Illinois, and held a persistent track, across all of southern Illinois, from near Carbondale, to Marion, to Eddyville. The storm continued into western Kentucky. It produced golfball size hail in Marion Kentucky, and persisted with supercell characteristics all the way into southern Hopkins and northern Christian counties in west Kentucky.
