Details on June 22 downbursts in Indiana and Kentucky [Updated with Path Graphics]

ON THE EVENING OF JUNE 22, SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS PRODUCED DAMAGING WIND GUSTS OVER PORTIONS OF SOUTHWEST INDIANA AND NORTHWEST KENTUCKY.  SOME OF THE HARDEST HIT AREAS INCLUDE NORTHEASTERN PORTIONS OF VANDERBURGH AND PIKE COUNTIES IN SOUTHWEST INDIANA, WHERE PEAK WINDS WERE AT LEAST 90 MPH.  NEWBURGH INDIANA HAD A MEASURED WIND GUST TO 87 MPH, WHICH CAUSED SPOTTY STRUCTURAL DAMAGE (MAINLY TO SHINGLES) AND WIDESPREAD DAMAGE TO TREES AND POWER LINES.  STRONG THUNDERSTORM WINDS ALSO OCCURRED NEAR MORGANFIELD AND DAWSON SPRINGS KENTUCKY.  CONDITIONS THAT DAY WERE FAVORABLE FOR STRONG THUNDERSTORM DOWNBURSTS, OWING TO THE VERY UNSTABLE ATMOSPHERE AND RELATIVELY DRY AIR IN THE MID LEVELS OF THE ATMOSPHERE.  THE COLLAPSE OF EACH STORM RESULTED IN AN ACCELERATING DOWNDRAFT OF RAIN AND WIND THAT SPREAD OUT LATERALLY ONCE IT HIT THE GROUND.  BELOW IS MORE INFORMATION ON THE JUNE 22 DOWNBURST ACTIVITY.
