March 18 marks the 85th anniversary of the Tri-State Tornado

                                      1925 Tri-State Tornado 85th Anniversary

FOR THOUSANDS OF RESIDENTS IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI...SOUTHERN
ILLINOIS...AND SOUTHWEST INDIANA...THE DAYS FOLLOWING MARCH 18
1925 MUST HAVE BEEN HORRENDOUS. IN A MATTER OF HOURS...695 LIVES
WERE TAKEN...WHILE THOUSANDS WERE INJURED OR LEFT HOMELESS. WITH
SO MANY ATROCITIES...SO MANY INJURIES...SO MUCH DESTRUCTION...AND
SO MANY LIVES TORN APART BY A SINGLE STORM...IT WOULD TAKE MONTHS
TO REBUILD WHAT NATURE HAD DEMOLISHED IN LESS THAN FOUR HOURS.
IN REMEMBRANCE OF THIS TRAGIC PART OF AMERICAN HISTORY...THE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WILL COMMEMORATE THE 85TH ANNIVERSARY OF
THE GREAT TRI-STATE TORNADO ON THURSDAY MARCH 18...FROM 9 AM TO
NOON. THE EVENT...WHICH ALSO SERVES AS OUR ANNUAL SPRING SEVERE
WEATHER SEMINAR...WILL BE HELD IN CARTERVILLE ILLINOIS AT THE JOHN
A. LOGAN COLLEGE O`NEIL AUDITORIUM.
THE MARCH 18 CEREMONY WILL NOT ONLY PROVIDE A PAST REVIEW OF THE
1925 TORNADO BY AUTHOR PETER FELKNOR...BUT WILL ALSO INCLUDE
FINDINGS FROM RESEARCH CONDUCTED ON THIS EVENT IN JUST THE PAST
FIVE YEARS. WE WILL ALSO TAKE A LOOK AT THE WORST DERECHO TO HIT
OUR REGION IN MODERN HISTORY ON MAY 8 2009. THE MARCH 18 EVENT
WILL CLOSE WITH A STORMREADY RECOGNITION PRESENTATION FOR
MURPHYSBORO ILLINOIS...WHICH HOLDS THE RECORD FOR THE MOST TORNADO
FATALITIES OF ANY U.S. CITY.
