Photos of dust devils observed last weekend - new photos added

The following are photos of dust devils taken by Charlie Kiesel, a trained spotter in Fort Branch, Indiana. The photos are all of the same vortex near Fort Branch, about twelve miles north of Evansville. Numerous dust devils were witnessed over a three-day period from October 7-9 from southeast Missouri to southwest Indiana.

Conditions were ripe for dust devils recently. Dust devils form on very warm and sunny afternoons with dry ground and light winds. The dust devils near Fort Branch were reported to be up to 40 feet in diameter, and one stayed on the ground for over a mile.
