Several inches of snow blanketed southern parts of the area Monday

Heavy snow blanketed southern portions of the forecast area with several inches of snow Monday.  Snowfall accumulations were quite varied with most of the white stuff falling along and south of the Ohio River.  Greater than 2 inches fell generally along and south of a line from Doniphan Missouri to Golconda Illinois to Owensboro Kentucky.  Greater than 4 inches of snow accumulated in the southeast Missouri bootheel and in western Kentucky south of Marion and Madisonville.  The highest snowfall totals were centered on a narrow corridor from Hickman to Mayfield to Benton, then east across the lakes to south of Princeton and north of Hopkinsville.  The grand prize winner of 10 inches was reported in Draffenville.  Meanwhile, northern sections of southeast Missouri, southern Illinois, and southwest Indiana were lucky to even measure any snow.  We measured 6 inches of snow here at the National Weather Service office in West Paducah.

While a Monday snow event had been expected for several days, it turns out the magnitude of the snow was much greater than forecast.  A Winter Weather Advisory for snow was issued Sunday for the area that received the greatest snow accumulation.  However, at that time, only 1 to 3 inches of snow was expected.  Even as late as Sunday night, computer models continued to show more of an advisory event--with forecast snow accumulations remaining below 4 inches.  What was it then that made this a snow to remember for the southern part of the area?  You can thank the deformation zone on the northwest periphery of the low track.  Enhanced lifting within this zone coupled with more available moisture resulted in much more efficient snow production--with some locations picking up as much as 1 to 2 inches per hour at the height of the event.  As you may have guessed by now, the computer models we use on a daily basis are sometimes not the best at handling such mesoscale (localized) snow banding, which makes our job of providing the best forecast possible that much more challenging during winter weather events.

Below is a map of snowfall accumulations reported from across the area.  Following that is a summary of Local Storm Reports issued today.  We would like to thank those of you who took time out of your day to report in with these snow totals.  Your timely observations make our job so much easier, and help us to better serve you in keeping the forecast current.
