Below is a statement on night time tornado threats:

...INCREASED SAFETY CONCERNS RELATED TO TORNADO THREAT TONIGHT...

RESEARCH CONDUCTED BOTH ON A REGIONAL AND NATIONAL LEVEL DOCUMENT
THE INCREASED HAZARDS RELATED TO TORNADOES THAT OCCUR AT NIGHT. ON
THE NATIONAL LEVEL...THE FOLLOWING FINDINGS WERE DERIVED FROM
RESEARCH CONDUCTED BY NORTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY; 1.THE PUBLIC IS
LESS LIKELY TO RECEIVE WARNINGS ISSUED AT NIGHT, 2.THE PUBLIC IS
MORE LIKELY TO BE IN MORE VULNERABLE HOUSING AND BUILDING STRUCTURES
AT NIGHT, 3.MOBILE HOMES ARE THE LEADING LOCATION FOR TORNADO
FATALITIES, 4.TORNADO FATALITIES ARE ENHANCED DURING THE LATE FALL
AND WINTER, 5.NIGHTTIME TORNADOES ARE TWICE AS LIKELY TO KILL AS
DAYTIME TORNADOES, AND 6.OUR REGION HAS AMONG THE HIGHEST PERCENTAGE
OF NIGHTTIME TORNADOES AND NIGHTTIME TORNADO FATALITIES OF ANYWHERE
IN THE U.S.

IN THE QUAD STATE REGION OF SOUTHEAST MISSOURI...SOUTHERN ILLINOIS
...SOUTHWEST INDIANA AND WESTERN KENTUCKY...43 OF THE 52 TORNADO
FATALITIES SINCE 1996 HAVE OCCURRED AT NIGHT WITH 36 OF THE 52
OCCURRING BETWEEN MIDNIGHT AND SUNRISE. THIRTY SEVEN OF THE 52
TORNADO FATALITIES WERE IN MOBILE HOMES...WITH 4 IN VEHICLES AND 11
IN PERMANENT HOMES.

OVER THE LAST DECADE...THE LOWER OHIO/MIDDLE MISSISSIPPI VALLEY...
INCLUDING MUCH OF OUR FOUR STATE REGION...HAS AMONG THE HIGHEST
FREQUENCY OF STRONG AND VIOLENT TORNADOES. SEVERAL OF THESE STRONG
TO VIOLENT AND DEADLY TORNADOES HAVE OCCURRED DURING THE WINTER...A
TIME OF YEAR MANY IN OUR AREA DO NOT ASSOCIATE WITH SEVERE WEATHER.
BEING READY FOR SEVERE WEATHER IS NOT JUST FOR THE SPRING SEASON.

TORNADOES AND OTHER FORMS OF SEVERE WEATHER CAN HAPPEN YEAR
ROUND...DAY OR NIGHT. MANY OF THE TORNADOES THAT FORM DURING THE
FALL AND WINTER DO SO DURING THE NIGHT.

STAY ABREAST OF THE LATEST WEATHER FORECASTS AND BE SURE YOUR HAVE A
WORKING NOAA WEATHER RADIO WITH ALERT CAPABILITY AND/OR OTHER MEANS
SUCH AS CELL PHONE ALERTS TO RECEIVE WARNINGS. HAVING A MEANS TO
RECEIVE WARNINGS COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE OR THE LIFE OF A LOVED ONE.
WHEN A WARNING IS ISSUED CALL RELATIVES OR FRIENDS THAT MAY BE IN
THE WARNED AREA.
