Overview of Halloween storms

During the early evening hours on October 31, the Storm Prediction Center issued Tornado Watch 554 for southeast Missouri, southern Illinois, southwest Indiana, and most of western Kentucky. The watch was issued as storms slowly intensified over southeast Missouri. These storms organized and spread east across the watch area during the evening. Very strong winds aloft compensated for weak instability, resulting in scattered areas of wind damage and about a dozen tornadoes. All but one of the tornadoes was rated EF-1 or weaker.
