November 17, 2013 Tornado Outbreak

November 17, 2013 Tornado Outbreak

A major severe weather outbreak unfolded on Sunday November 17 as numerous tornadoes were spawned from supercell thunderstorms that formed in an unstable and highly sheared atmosphere ahead of an approaching strong cold front.  Provided below are results of over a dozen damage surveys conducted by the National Weather Service in Paducah.  Tornadoes are organized by EF rating, then peak wind speed, and finally path length.  It is interesting to note that every damage survey revealed a tornado as the culprit—not downburst winds.  While it is not uncommon for severe weather and tornadoes to occur in the fall, the magnitude and shear number of tornadoes that touched down is truly remarkable.
