March Climate Review and April Preview

March 2014 started out as a lion with cool and unsettled weather experienced across most of south central and southeast Colorado for the first 2 days of the month. Warmer, drier and windy weather was then experienced across the state through rest of the month, with much of south central and southeast Colorado seeing below average precipitation for the month as a whole.   At or below normal temperatures were experienced across most the of area as well in March, save southwestern Colorado through the San Luis Valley, which saw above normal temperatures for the month as a whole.  The following graphics depict departures from normal for both temperatures and precipitation experienced across the state over the past month.

 

 

The average temperature in Alamosa over the past month of March was 36.5 degrees. This is 3.0 degrees above normal and makes March of 2014 the 15th warmest on record, though well below the average temperature of 39.4 degrees recorded in March of 2004.  Alamosa received 0.40 inches of precipitation and 3.4 inches of snow through the month of March, which is 0.13 inches and 1.6 inches below normal, respectively.

The average temperature in Colorado Springs over the past month of March was 39.5 degrees, which is 0.4 degrees above normal. Colorado Springs received 0.42 inches of precipitation and 2.8 inches of snow through the month of March, which is 0.58 inches and 5.2 inches below normal, respectively.   

The average temperature in Pueblo over the past month of March was 43.1 degrees, which is 0.8 degrees above normal. Pueblo received 0.76 inches of precipitation and 2.4 inches of snow through the month of March,  which is 0.17 inches below and 3.3 inches below normal, respectively. 

Looking ahead into April, in Alamosa, the average high and low temperature of 55 degrees and 21 degrees on April 1st warms to 64 degrees and 29 degrees by the end of the month, with an average monthly temperature of 41.8 degrees.  Alamosa averages 0.59 inches of precipitation and 3.6 inches of snow in April.

In Colorado Springs, the average high and low temperature of 56 degrees and 30 degrees on April 1st warms to 64 degrees and 38 degrees, respectively, by the end of the month, with an average monthly temperature of 46.5 degrees. Colorado Springs averages 1.42 inches of precipitation along with 4.9 inches of snow in April. 

In Pueblo,  the average high and low temperature of 63 degrees and 30 degrees on April 1st warms to 72 degrees and 39 degrees by the end of the month, with an average monthly temperature of 50.6 degrees. Pueblo averages 1.4 inches of precipitation along with 3.8 inches of snow in April.
