April Climate Review and May Preview

April 2014 saw a full spectrum of weather across the area. Well above and well below seasonal temperatures were experienced across the area over the past month, along with periods of rain, snow and strong winds.  For the month as a whole,  at or slightly above normal temperatures were experienced across most the of lower elevations, with at or slightly below seasonal temperatures experienced across the higher terrain. Precipitation was near to below normal across most of the area in April, save areas over and near the eastern mountains, which saw above normal precipitation.  The following graphics depict departures from normal for both temperatures and precipitation experienced across the state over the past month.

 

 

The average temperature in Alamosa over the past month of  April was 42.6 degrees, which is 0.9 degrees above normal.  Alamosa received 1.06 inches of precipitation in April. This is 0.47 inches above normal and makes April of 2014 the 13th wettest April on record. Alamosa also received 7.0 inches of snow through the month of April, which is 3.4 inches above normal.

The average temperature in Colorado Springs over the past month of April was 47.5 degrees, which is 1.0 degrees above normal. Colorado Springs received 0.92 inches of precipitation and 7.5 inches of snow through the month of April, which is 0.50 inches below normal and 2.6 inches above normal, respectively.   

The average temperature in Pueblo over the past month of April was 52.1 degrees, which is 1.5 degrees above normal. Pueblo received 2.06 inches of precipitation in April, which is 0.66 inches above normal. Pueblo also received 8.3 inches of snow throughout the month. This is 6.9 inches above normal and makes April of 2014 the 15th snowiest on record, though well behind the 21.2 inches recorded in April of 1957.

Looking ahead into May, in Alamosa, the average high and low temperature of 64 degrees and 29 degrees on May 1st warms to 74 degrees and 37 degrees, respectively,  by the end of the month, with an average monthly temperature of 51.2 degrees.  Alamosa averages 0.58 inches of precipitation and 0.9 inches of snow in May.

In Colorado Springs, the average high and low temperature of 65 degrees and 38 degrees on May 1st warms to 74 degrees and 47 degrees, respectively, by the end of the month, with an average monthly temperature of 55.9 degrees. Colorado Springs averages 2.03 inches of precipitation along with 0.7 inches of snow in May. 

In Pueblo,  the average high and low temperature of 72 degrees and 39 degrees on May 1st warms to 81 degrees and 49 degrees, respectively,  by the end of the month, with an average monthly temperature of 60.4 degrees. Pueblo averages 1.51inches of precipitation along with 0.5 inches of snow in May.

 

Below is the Climate Prediction Center's temperature and precipitation outlook for May, which gives a slight nod to above normal temperatures across the area, with equal chances for above, below and near  precipitation.
