May Climate Review and June Preview

May of 2014 saw at or slightly above normal precipitation over and near the higher terrain, while the southeastern Colorado Plains continued to see generally below normal precipitation for the month as a whole.  Temperatures across the area over the past month of May also followed suite, with at or below normal temperatures experienced over and near the higher terrain, along with generally at or above normal temperatures experienced across the eastern Plains.  The following graphics depict departures from normal for both temperatures and precipitation experienced across the state over the past month.  

 The average temperature in Alamosa over the past month of  May was 50.6 degrees, which is 0.6 degrees below normal.  Alamosa received 0.23 inches of precipitation and 1.3 inches of snow though out the month of May, which is 0.35 inches below normal and 0.4 inches above normal, respectively.

The average temperature in Colorado Springs over the past month of May was 56.8 degrees, which is 0.9 degrees above normal. Colorado Springs received 2.56 inches of precipitation and 0.4 inches of snow through out the month of May, which is 0.53 inches above normal and 0.3 inches below normal, respectively.   

The average temperature in Pueblo over the past month of May was 60.4 degrees, which is 0.9 degrees above normal. Pueblo received 0.65 inches of precipitation and a trace of snow through out the month of May, which is 0.86 inches and 0.5 inches below normal, respectively.   

Looking ahead into June, in Alamosa, the average high and low temperature of 74 degrees and 37 degrees on June 1st warms to 82 degrees and 44 degrees, respectively,  by the end of the month, with an average monthly temperature of 59.6 degrees.  Alamosa averages 0.49 inches of precipitation in June.

In Colorado Springs, the average high and low temperature of 74 degrees and 47 degrees on June 1st warms to 84 degrees and 55 degrees, respectively, by the end of the month, with an average monthly temperature of 65.1 degrees. Colorado Springs averages 2.50 inches of precipitation in June. 

In Pueblo,  the average high and low temperature of 82 degrees and 49 degrees on June 1st warms to 92 degrees and 57 degrees, respectively,  by the end of the month, with an average monthly temperature of 70.0 degrees. Pueblo averages 1.36 inches of precipitation in June.

Below is the Climate Prediction Center's temperature and precipitation outlook for June, which gives a equal chances of above, below and near normal temperatures and precipitation across area, save a slight nod to above normal temperatures across the far southeastern Plains and a slight nod for above normal precipitation for northern portions of the eastern Plains.
