September Climate Review and October Preview

September of 2014 was a warm and mainly dry month across area, save for areas along the Continental Divide and portions of the far southeast plains, which saw at to well above normal precipitation for the month as a whole.  The following graphics indicate preliminary departures from normal for both temperatures and precipitation experienced across the state over the past month. 

   

The average temperature in Alamosa for the month of September was 58.7 degrees. This is 3.7 degrees above normal and makes September of 2014 the second warmest September on record, slightly behind the 59.0 degrees recorded in September of 1933.  Alamosa recorded 0.41 inches of precipitation throughout the month of September, which is 0.50 inches below normal.    

The average temperature in Colorado Spring for the month of September was 63.9 degrees. This is 3.0 degrees above normal and makes September of 2014 tied with September of 1953 as the 15th warmest September on record, though remains well behind the 67.0 degrees recorded in September of 2010.  Colorado Springs recorded 0.61 inches of precipitation throughout the month of September, which is 0.58 inches below normal.  A trace of snow was recorded at the Colorado Springs Airport (September 12th) throughout the month on September, which is 0.2 inches below normal.  Hail was reported at the Colorado Springs Airport on September 29th.    

The average temperature in Pueblo for the month of September was 67.3 degrees, which is 2.7 degrees above normal.  Pueblo recorded 0.62 inches of precipitation throughout the month of September, which is 0.15 inches below normal.       

Looking ahead into October, in Alamosa, the average high and low temperatures of 68 degrees and 30 degrees on October 1st, cool to 55 degrees and 19 degrees by the end of the month, with an average monthly temperature of 43.1 degrees. Alamosa averages 0.68 inches of precipitation and 2.1 inches of snow in October.  

In Colorado Springs, the average high and low temperatures of 68 degrees and 41 degrees on October 1st, cool to 58 degrees and 31 degrees by the end of the month, with an average monthly temperature of 49.4 degrees.  The mean date of the first freeze in Colorado Springs is October 1st.  Colorado Springs averages 0.82 inches of precipitation and 2.9 inches of snow in October.

In Pueblo, the average high and low temperatures of 75 degrees and 40 degrees on October 1st, cool to 64 degrees and 29 degrees by the end of the month, with an average monthly temperature of 51.8 degrees. The mean date of the first freeze in Pueblo is October 8th.  Pueblo averages 0.72 inches of precipitation and 1.3 inches of snow in October. 

Below is the Climate Prediction Center's temperature and precipitation outlook for October, which gives equal chances of above, below and near normal temperatures and precipitation across the area, save a slight tilt to above normal precipitation across southern portions of the state.
