November Climate Review and December Preview

November of 2014 was a month of temperature extremes, especially across the southeastern plains where well above seasonal temperatures were experienced through the first third of the month. An unseasonably strong arctic air mass then invaded eastern Colorado, with well below seasonal temperatures and several consecutive record low maximum temperatures experienced through the second third of the month. Unseasonably warm air returned to Colorado for the last week of the month, though this was not enough to overcome the cold temperatures experienced through the middle of the month, owning to below normal temperatures for the month as a whole across the state, save for portions of the San Luis valley, which saw at or above seasonal temperatures in November. As for precipitation, at or below normal precipitation was recorded across most of south central and southeast Colorado for the month of November, save areas along the Continental Divide and the southeast mountains, which saw above normal precipitation for the month November. The following graphics indicate preliminary departures from normal for both temperatures and precipitation across the state over the past month.

The preliminary average temperature in Colorado Springs for the month of November was 36.2 degrees, which is 1.9 degrees below normal. This remains well ahead the coldest average temperature of 29.8 degrees recorded in November of 1972.  Colorado Springs recorded 0.26 inches of precipitation through out November, which is 0.14 inches below normal. The Colorado Springs Airport recorded 6.8 inches of snow for the month of November. This is 2.1 inches above normal and makes November of 2014 the 19th snowiest November on record. This, however, remains well below the 26.3 inches of snow recorded through out November of 1991 (and November of 1946 where weather records indicate at least 28 inches of snow fell over a 4 day period from Nov 2-5, in a documented blizzard across eastern Colorado. However, snowfall data for Colorado Springs is incomplete through this period, and are therefore not included in the record books).

The preliminary average temperature in Pueblo for the month of November was 36.9 degrees. This is 2.4 degrees below normal and makes November of 2014 the 22nd coldest November on record. This  remains well ahead of the coldest average temperature of 31.1 degrees recorded through out November of 1985.  Pueblo recorded 0.46 inches of precipitation in November, which is 0.01 inches below normal. The Pueblo Memorial Airport recorded 9.9 inches of snow through out November. This is 4.5 inches above normal and makes November of 2014 the 15th snowiest November on record in Pueblo.  This, however, remains well below the 29.3 inches recorded through out November of 1946.

The preliminary average temperature in Alamosa for the month of November was 31.9 degrees, which is 2.4 degrees above normal. This, however, remains well behind the warmest average temperature of 34.8 degrees recorded in November of 1965.  Alamosa recorded 0.34 inches of precipitation through out November, which is 0.08 inches below normal. The Alamosa Airport recorded 1.6 inches of snow through out the month of November, which is 2.1 inches below normal.

Looking ahead into December, in Colorado Springs, the average high temperature of 44 degrees on December 1st cools to 41 degrees through the middle of the month, before slowly warming back to 43 degrees by the end of the month. The average low temperature of 20 degrees on December 1st cools to 17 degrees by the end of the month. The average temperature for the month of December in Colorado Springs is 29.8 degrees.  Colorado Springs averages 0.34 inches of precipitation and 5.7 inches of snow in December.

In Pueblo, the average high  temperature of 49 degrees on December 1st cools to 45 degrees through the middle of the month, before slowly warming back to 46 degrees by the end of the month. The average low temperature of 17 degrees on December 1st cools to 13 degrees through the middle of the month before slowly warming back to 14 degrees by the end of the month. The average temperature for the month of December in Pueblo is 30.1 degrees.  Pueblo averages 0.38 inches of precipitation and 5.5 inches of snow in December.

In Alamosa, the average high and low temperatures of 39 degrees and 5 degrees on December 1st, cool to 34 degrees and minus 2 degrees by the end of the month, with an average monthly temperature of 17.9 degrees. Alamosa averages 0.35 inches of precipitation and 4.5 inches of snow in December.

Below is the Climate Prediction Center's temperature and precipitation outlook for December, which gives equal chances of above, below and near normal temperatures and precipitation across the area, save a slight nod to below normal temperatures across southeastern Colorado and a slight tilt to above normal  precipitation to southern Colorado.
