How Cold Was December?

Preliminary data from the past month indicate December 2009 was one of the top ten coldest December's on record across southeast Colorado.  Preliminary data for Colorado Springs indicates the December 2009 average temperature was 23.3 F, which is 5.7 F below the normal December average temperature of 29 F.  This makes December 2009 the seventh coldest on record and the coldest December since 1983; the coldest December on record with an average temperature of 18.4 F

Preliminary data for Pueblo indicate December 2009 had an average temperature of 24.4 F, which is 5.9 F below the December normal average temperature of 30.3 F. This  makes December 2009 the tenth coldest on record and the coldest December since 1983; the second coldest on record when the average monthly temperature in Pueblo was 20.8 F.  The coldest December on record in Pueblo was in 1909  when the average monthly temperature was 20.2 F.

The cold weather was also felt across south central Colorado, but to a lesser degree, as preliminary data indicates the December 2009 average temperature for Alamosa was 16.1 F, which is 1 F below the normal December average temperature of 17.1 F.  This makes December 2009 tied for the twenty first coldest December on record. This is also well above the coldest December on record, 1991, which had an average temperature of 5.1 F.
