May Climate Review and June Preview

May of 2013 started out cold and wet across the south central and southeast Colorado. Unfortunately, this wet trend did not continue through the rest of the month as much of the area saw well below normal precipitation for the entire month of May. One exception to this was across the Central mountains which again saw above normal precipitation for the month of May.  The following graphics depict departures from normal for both temperatures and precipitation experienced across the state over the past month.


The average temperature in Pueblo over the past month of May was 60.8 degrees, which is 0.4 degrees above normal. Pueblo received 0.73 inches of precipitation through the month of May, which is 0.78 inches below normal. Pueblo also received 0.6 inches of  snow through the month of May, which is 0.1 inches above normal.

The average temperature in Colorado Springs over the past month of May was 56.3 degrees, which is 0.4 degrees above normal. Colorado Springs received 1.14 inches of precipitation through the month of May, which is 0.89 inches below normal. Colorado Springs also received 1.8 inches of snow through out the month, which is 1.1 inches above normal. 

The average temperature in Alamosa for the month of May was 49.0 degrees, which is 2.2 degrees below normal. Alamosa received 0.18 inches of precipitation and no snow through the month of May, which is 0.40 inches and 0.9 inches below normal, respectively.

Looking ahead into June, in Pueblo, the average high and low temperature of 82 degrees and 49 degrees on June 1st warms to 92 degrees and 57 degrees, respectively, by the end of the month, with an average monthly temperature of 70.0 degrees. Pueblo averages 1.36 inches of precipitation in June. 

In Colorado Springs,  the average high and low temperature of 74 degrees and 47degrees on June 1st warms to 84 degrees and 55 degrees by the end of the month, with an average monthly temperature of 65.1 degrees. Colorado Springs averages 2.50 inches of precipitation in June. 

In Alamosa, the average high and low temperature of 74 degrees and 37 degrees on June 1st warms to 82 degrees and 44 degrees by the end of the month, with an average monthly temperature of 59.6 degrees. Alamosa averages 0.49 inches of precipitation in June.

Below is the Climate Prediction Center's temperature and precipitation outlook for June of 2013, which gives better chances for above normal temperatures across the area, as well as equal chances of above, below or near normal precipitation across south central Colorado and a slight tilt to below normal precipitation across southeast Colorado.
