August Climate Review and September Preview

August of 2013 was a generally warm and a relatively wet month across south central and southeast Colorado, save portions of the upper and lower Arkansas River valley which saw below normal precipitation.  The following graphics depict departures from normal for both temperatures and precipitation experienced across the state over the past month.


The average temperature in Colorado Springs over the past month of August was 70.8 degrees. This is 1.2 degrees above normal and makes August of 2013 the 12th warmest on record, well below the average temperature of 74.1 degrees recorded in August of 2011. Colorado Springs received 5.72 inches of precipitation through the month of August. This is 2.38 inches above normal and makes August of 2013 the 6th wettest on record, though still well below the 7.09 inches recorded in August of 1929.

The average temperature in Pueblo over the past month of August was 75.2 degrees. This is 1.8 degrees above normal and makes August of 2013 tied with 1913, 1960 and 2002 as the 25th warmest on record, though well below the average temperature of 79.8 degrees recorded in August of 1970. Pueblo received 3.92 inches of precipitation through the month of August. This is 1.60 inches above normal and makes August of 2013 the 10th wettest August on record, though still well below the 5.85 inches recorded in August of 1955. 

The average temperature in Alamosa for the past month of August was 64.3 degrees. This is 1.6 degrees above normal and makes August of 2013 tied with 2003 as the 11th warmest August on record, though well below the 66.0 degrees recorded in August of 2011. Alamosa received 2.47 inches of precipitation through the month of August.  This is 1.20 inches above normal and makes August of 2013 the 6th wettest August on record, though still well below the 5.40 inches recorded in August of 1993. 

 Looking ahead into September, in Colorado Springs, the average high and low temperature of 79 degrees and 53 degrees on September 1st cools to 69 degrees and 41 degrees, respectively, by the end of the month, with an average monthly temperature of 60.9 degrees. Colorado Springs averages 1.19 inches of precipitation along with 0.2 inches of snow in September.  

In Pueblo,  the average high and low temperature of 87 degrees and 55 degrees on September 1st cools to 76 degrees and 41 degrees by the end of the month, with an average monthly temperature of 64.7 degrees. Pueblo averages 0.77 inches of precipitation along with 0.3 inches of snow in September.

In Alamosa, the average high and low temperature of 77 degrees and 43 degrees on September 1st cools to 68 degrees and 31 degrees by the end of the month, with an average monthly temperature of 55.0 degrees. The average date of the first freeze in Alamosa is September 11th. Alamosa also averages 0.91 inches of precipitation in September.
 

Below is the Climate Prediction Center's temperature and precipitation outlook for September, which gives a slight tilt to above normal temperatures along with mainly equal chances for above, below and near normal precipitation across south central and southeast Colorado, save a slight tillt to above normal precipitation for the southwest and central mountains.
