From mid afternoon Sunday August 30 to just after midnight on Monday August 31, over 9000 lightning strikes were recorded in the forecast area covered by the NWS office in Riverton, WY. The graphic below shows locations of the cloud-to-ground lightning strikes as recorded by the National Lightning Detection Network. The strikes are color coded to show the hourly progression. For instance, red positive (+) and negative (-) signs on the graphic indicate those strikes that occured between 4pm and 5pm, while the dark blue indicates those between 5pm and 6pm.
Fremont county alone recorded 2564 strikes, while Hot Springs county picked up over a thousand and both Washakie and Park counties recorded over 1500 each.
Local forecasters noted that lightning shows such as this have not occurred in the area for 4 to 5 years.
