The National Weather Service office in Riverton, Wyoming has begun using Facebook in order to expand its use of social media and streamline Weather Forecast Office operations.
The National Weather Service Prototype team, formed in the spring of 2010, explored the application of Facebook as a tool to expand the reach of National Weather Service information at field offices and national centers with extremely positive results. The National Weather Service has now decided to expand this program nationwide. Posted content will range from a mix of environmental information such as daily weather forecast and warning information to outreach and education information and will consist primarily of manual posts, though automated posting will also be tested.
The National Weather Service office in Riverton hopes Facebook will offer another venue through which we can provide text-only messages, images/graphics, and links for our ‘fans’ to be better informed of the various weather events that develop throughout our County Warning Area in Wyoming. One such event is the potential for spring flooding across Wyoming this year. Furthermore, we hope that Facebook will help us maintain awareness of current weather conditions by allowing the public to post current weather conditions to our wall, especially when hazardous weather impacts the region.
Facebook users will be able to find our page by searching for “US National Weather Service Riverton” on Facebook or at:
