A Snowy Beginning to May - Summary of Spring Storm

The National Weather Service

Summary | Snowfall Totals | Reporting Snowfall | Safety

A couple strong spring storms affected the Cowboy State to end April and begin May.  The first system on Monday produced very strong westerly winds ahead of a Canadian cold front, and strong northwest winds in wake of the cold front Monday night.  Precipitation with this initial system was mainly on the light side. On the heels of the first storm, a stronger storm system affected the Cowboy State Tuesday and Wednesday.  Snow broke out early Tuesday evening across much of central and northern Wyoming as well as portions of western Wyoming later in the evening.  The snow quickly expanded and intensified across the Wind River Basin and Natrona county Tuesday evening with lighter snowfall across the Big Horn Basin and Johnson County.  The snow lingered through much of the day Wednesday, but was much lighter.  The heaviest snowfall occurred in the Lander Foothills where 10 to 16 inches of snow accumulated.  During the predawn hours Wednesday, a relatively narrow area of heavy snow developed along the stalled frontal boundary across the Upper Green River Basin affecting Big Piney and Marbleton.  A foot of snow fell in that area.  Please see the snowfall summary below for more snow totals.

Wind reports from the strong winds that occurred Monday.
