September 1, 2013 MODIS Satellite Image of Smoke Plumes

The above image was taken in the early afternoon on September 1, 2013.  This may be the last image where the terrain across Wyoming is visible from satellite over the next several days as extensive cloud cover is expected to arrive on Labor Day.  The Burroughs Fire, 12 miles north of Dubois, had grown to 1,000 acres since yesterday and was the only fire emitting a noticeable smoke plume across Wyoming today.  Warmer temperatures and lighter winds aloft were keeping much of the smoke from Idaho wildfires trapped in the Snake River Plain in Idaho and west of the Continental Divide in Wyoming.

The above image is updated daily at the Forest Service's Remote Sensing Applications Center.
