Memorial Day, originally known as decoration day was first established in 1868 as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers.  It was declared that Decoration Day should be observed on May 30th because flowers would be in bloom across the country.

In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by an act of Congress, and was moved from May 30th to the last Monday in May to make for a 3 day holiday weekend.
