The first day of Summer begins today, June 21, 2009.  Officially, the Summer Solstice began at 12:45 AM CDT.  The solstice is an astronomical term for describing the tilt of the earth's axis as being either the closest or furthest away from the sun.  While meteorologically, Summer begins June 1st, the official first day of Summer typically falls on June 21st.
