...Overnight Low Temperatures Above Average for July...

The Streak of Morning Low Temperatures Above 70 Degrees has Ended

Several stations reported morning low temperatures of 69 degrees on the morning of the 25th, thus ending the streak of morning low tempertures above 70 degrees. Cooling from rainfall that fell across the area on the evening of the 24th was enough to drop the early morning temperatures to below 70 degrees. This cooldown will likely be temporary as warm and muggy morning conditions are expected to return later this week.

For much of this month, most of Southwest Missouri and extreme Southeast Kansas have experienced warm and very humid conditions. While daytime high temperatures have actually been close to normal for July, overnight lows have been averaging about 3.3 degrees above normal thus far.

These overnight warm temperatures are due in part to the fact that average dewpoints, a common measure of atmospheric moisture content used by meteorologists, have reached levels that have not been seen in at least the last 15 years. High dewpoints tend to keep overnight temperatures warm. As atmospheric temperatures cool to near the dew point, condensation occurs and heat is released that and inhibits further cooling.
