A confirmed tornado in Nemaha County on 03/23/09

The National Weather Service in Topeka completed a damage survey Tuesday, March 24, 2009 with the help of Nemaha County Emergency Management and Law Enforcement Agencies.  From the survey it was determined that an EF-1 tornado touched down in northern Nemaha County, touching down roughly halfway in between Seneca and Oneida and moving northeast along an 8.5 mile path primarily through rural areas before lifting just south of the Nebraska border.  A picture of the damage path is included below:

...EF-1 TORNADO CONFIRMED IN NEMAHA COUNTY...

A NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DAMAGE SURVEY TEAM HAS CONFIRMED A
TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN IN NEMAHA COUNTY ON MARCH 23, 2009.

THE TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN 3 MILES WEST OF ONEIDA, KANSAS AT 633 PM
CDT. THE TORNADO BROKE A POWER POLE AND TORE THE ROOF OFF A LARGE
HOG CONFINEMENT BUILDING. THIS TORNADO CONTINUED NORTHEAST FOR
APPROXIMATELY 8.5 MILES AND LIFTED JUST BEFORE CROSSING INTO
NEBRASKA. NUMEROUS BUILDINGS AND HOMES WERE DAMAGED IN THE PATH.

THE TORNADO LIFTED AT 645 PM CDT APPROXIMATELY 5 MILES NORTHEAST OF
BERN, KANSAS. ADDITIONAL DAMAGE OCCURRED ACROSS NEMAHA
COUNTY...SPECIFICALLY AROUND SENECA...FROM STRONG STRAIGHT LINE
THUNDERSTORM WINDS.

THE TORNADO WAS RATED EF-1 ON THE ENHANCED FUJITA SCALE. ADDITIONAL
