Strong Winds and Heavy Rain Move Through East Central Kansas

August 10, 2009

On the morning of Monday, August 10 a cluster of thunderstorms formed in central Kansas which organized into a bow echo around 11:00 am and produced strong winds at the surface. By 11:30 Monday morning, reports of strong damaging winds associated with the line of storms were received by the National Weather Service in Topeka. The hardest hit region was Dickinson and Morris counties; however damage was also reported out of Ottawa, Lyon, Geary, Osage, Coffey, Anderson, and Franklin counties. Numerous reports of structural damage and snapped trees were received from a widespread area, with the cities of Enterprise, White City, and Council Grove reporting roofs blown off of structures and large diameter trees snapped.  As the bow moved toward the east it produced significant tree and structural damage in the cities of Admire and Allen in Lyon County.  The storm left behind a swath of damage 20 miles wide that went from Saline County to the Kansas/Missouri border.  The storm moved out of Kansas and into Missouri around 4:30 pm.

A storm survey team from the National Weather Service in Topeka conducted a damage survey across Dickinson, Morris, and Lyon counties.  Wind speed estimates derived from structural and tree damage indicate widespread 70 to 80 mph winds with localized wind gusts of up to 90 mph
