October 2009 the Fourth Coldest on Record at Topeka

Remarks on the October 2009 climate summary for Topeka--

October 2009 will be remembered for it's cold temperatures.  The average temperature for the month was the **fourth** coldest on record, and the coldest since 1976.  This was largely due to an arctic airmass that took residence over the central portion of the nation around the middle of the month.  Although low temperatures were not terribly cold, high temperatures through the month often failed to reach those one might expect in the middle of December!  Records for the lowest maximum temperature were set on the 10th, 11th, and 15th of October 2009, while the high on the 13th tied the record.  The highest temperature on the 14th was just one degree shy of tying that day's record cold level as well!  Average temperature of the period from October 1st to October 15th were the coldest ever for the period--breaking the previous record by nearly 4 degrees!
