May 6-7 Severe Thunderstorms *Updated at 6:00 PM May 07*

Severe Thunderstorms Rip Through North Central and Northeastern Kansas on Thursday May 06, 2010

Severe thunderstorms tracked across much of the northern half of Kansas during the afternoon and evening hours on Thursday, May 6 before moving out of the area during the early morning hours Friday, May 7.  Two swaths of strong winds and large hail were caused by the storms Thursday night.  A southern swath of severe weather was caused by a supercell which moved through Dickinson, Morris, Lyon, and Osage counties.  Hail up to the size of baseballs was reported as well as strong winds up to 90 to 100 mph.  A house and its attached garage near Hope, KS were seriously damaged as a result of the strong winds just south of the supercell.  Other outbuildings were also destroyed near Hope.

Another swath of more widespread severe weather presented itself just south of the Kansas/Nebraska border as numerous supercells moved eastward through north central and northeastern Kansas.  Hail up to the size of baseballs was reported throughout much of the area during the late evening to overnight hours. Strong 80 mph winds caused a large amount of damage to outbuildings throughout Republic county.  Cars were also crushed under large trees which were snapped by the strong winds.
