Sept. 15: Heavy Rain Falls Across Northeast Kansas

Strong thunderstorms brought heavy rain to much of north central, northeast, and east central Kansas on Tuesday night and Wednesday.  Thunderstorms moved across northern Kansas Tuesday night into Wednesday morning with very heavy rainfall.  Additional storms developed over the area as the first round passed through the region.  For the remainder of the afternoon and evening, thunderstorm development tended to "train" over the same areas for 1 to 3 hours.  In other words, the thunderstorms continuously moved over the same areas, just as train cars follow one another on the tracks.  Spotters reported rainfall rates in the range of 1 to 2 inches per hour, with numerous rainfall totals in the 3 to 6 inch range.  This did cause flash flooding across the region...with Anderson and southern Franklin counties receiving the most widespread flooding.

The first image below is the estimated rainfall totals between 7 AM Wednesday and 7 AM Thursday.  The second image indicates rainfall between Tuesday morning and Wednesday morning.  The third image indicates total estimated rainfall between September 9 and September 16.  Finally, at the bottom of the page is a list of rainfall reports across the region.
