Rain, Freezing Rain, Sleet, and Snow Possible Thursday Night - Friday

This page does not automatically refresh if left open.

Expected Weather:  Rain, light freezing rain, sleet and  light snow...and significantly cooler temperatures.

Areas Affected:  The best chance for light snow or minor ice accumulations due to freezing rain or freezing drizzle will be northwest of a Hiawatha to Herington line.

Timing: Starting after midnight Thursday night and ending Friday afternoon.

Expected Accumulations: Accumulations will be light, with minor ice accumulations possible northwest of an area from Hiawatha to Herington.  Any ice accumulations should remain less than one tenth (0.10) of an inch. 1-2 inches of snow is possible especially northwest of an area from Seneca to Minneapolis.  To the southeast of this line little or no snow or ice accumulation is expected.

Wind and Temperatures:  Temperatures will cool significantly, with 30 mph winds dropping wind chills below 0 by Friday night.

Potential Impacts

Even minor snow and ice accumulations can quickly cause hazardous driving conditions. Winds gusting to 30 mph will cause reduced visibilities in areas that receive accumulating snowfall.

Weather Discussion

A powerful storm system will move out of the Rockies and into the central Plains from Thursday into Friday.  Precipitation that does fall over the area will fall as a mixed bag, ranging from rain to freezing rain to sleet to snow.  Precipitation type will depend largely on the location of a cold frontal boundary forecast to track slowly across the region Friday morning.  Rain is expected ahead of the front with a narrow zone of freezing rain and sleet behind the front, and all snow expected well behind the frontal boundary.  After this front passes, a significantly colder airmass will move in, with wind chill readings falling well below zero on Friday night.
