December 20, 2012 Winter Storm Summary

A very strong, fast-moving storm system moved across the central and southern Plains on December 19th and 20th, bringing widespread snowfall and extremely strong winds to northeast Kansas.  Wind speeds frequently exceeded 50 mph, often at the same time as the heaviest snow fell.  While snowfall totals were not excessive, ranging from 1 to 6 inches across the area, the snow fell heavy at times with rates of 1 to 2 inches per hourVisibility dropped to nearly zero at times with numerous accidents and several road closures reported late Wednesday night into Thursday morning.
