2012 is the Warmest Year on Record for Topeka

The average temperature for a year for a particular location is calculated by averaging each day's maximum and minimum temperature for each day of the year.  The average temperature for Topeka in 2012 was 59.8 degrees.  This is the warmest average temperature on record for Topeka.  The previous record was 58.7 degrees, set in 1938.  Weather records for Topeka data back to 1887.  The months from March through July exhibited the greatest temperatures above normal, with each month ranking in the top 10 for the warmest average temperatures for their respective months.  More details and information on the year's climate can be found here.

Topeka has not been alone in experiencing the well above normal temperatures.  March was record-breaking for much of the nation and the nation's average annual temperature was well on its way to record levels in November.
