March roars in with record cold temperatures

March 3, 2013 - Several low temperature records were set and tied in Rapid City on March 1-2, 2014 as Arctic air settled over the northern Plains. The downtown Rapid City temperatures broke long-standing records set in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

At the Rapid City Regional Airport, the high temperature of 1 degree on March 1 broke the previous low maximum (coldest high temperature) record of 4 set in 1960. The low temperature of -17 tied the record set in 1962.  On March 2, the high temperature of 2 degrees broke the previous low maximum of 3 set in 1989 and the low temperature of -18 broke the previous record of -14 set in 1943.

At the National Weather Service Office in downtown Rapid City, the high temperature of -1 on March 1 set a record for the low maximum temperature, with the previous record 4 set in 1916. This reading also set the March record for low maximum temperature, which was 0 degrees on March 13, 1895. On March 2, the high temperature of 1 degree broke the previous low maximum record of 2 degrees in 1896 and the low temperature of -16 tied the record set in 1888--only one degree shy of the all-time March record low of -17 set March 3, 1891.
