Forecast Pages to Feature New Maps

Beginning Monday, October 20, the National Weather Service will use a Google Maps interface for navigation and location information on its point forecast web pages. Point forecast pages provide detailed weather information for a specific location by clicking on the map on NWS home pages. They are created from the National Digital Forecast Database.

The functionality of the point and click maps on the forecast pages remains the same, but the Google Maps display more detailed geographic information, so users can confirm their locations.

The update will also provide the point forecast information in Keyhole Markup Language (kml) for GIS applications. More information on NWS use of Google Earth/Google Maps and other GIS applications can be found at http://www.weather.gov/credits.php#googlemapping
