A significant severe weather event unfolded across the region late Sunday afternoon and evening.  The severe weather was essentially a tale of two modes.  Across the northern part of the region, a squall line of severe thunderstorms produced widespread wind damage.  Across the south, numerous supercell thunderstorms tracked across southeast Missouri and western Kentucky.  The entire severe weather event shifted east of the area by midnight.

All told, the National Weather Service in Paducah received about 125 reports of wind damage, large hail, and tornadoes.  The first event was reported in Carter County, MO at 435 PM, and the last event occurred around 11 P.M. in Calloway County, KY.

The Paducah office issued 59 Severe Thunderstorm Warnings and 38 Tornado Warnings.

  • The largest reported hail was up to 3 inches in diameter at Gideon, Missouri in New Madrid County. Golf ball size hail was reported in several of the supercells that crossed the region.
  • A long-track supercell that started in Stoddard County, Missouri (just east of Poplar Bluff) maintained its intensity all the way across the Mississippi River, through Paducah and Hopkinsville, Kentucky, and then east into south central Kentucky.
  • The above supercell produced a very damaging tornado across Christian and Todd Counties.  The final damage assessment indicates over 240 homes were either severely damaged or destroyed, while 28 persons sustained injuries.  The damage path passed from west to east to the north of the city of Hopkinsville. The tornado continued across Todd County, where numerous residences were demolished.
  • Widespread wind damage from 60 to 90 mph thunderstorm winds occurred over portions of southern Illinois, southwest Indiana, and northwest Kentucky.
  • The most significant damage, including tornado damage, was surveyed by NWS personnel.  Details of these damage surveys can be found below, along with an updated list of all storm reports:
