Snow spread northeast across our region during the day on January 29. The snow fell steadily from late in the afternoon of the 29th through the overnight hours. By sunrise on the 30th, the snow was tapering to flurries. Gusty winds caused some drifting of the snow. Cold temperatures in the lower 20's caused the snow to stick to roads very well.

The snow was caused by an upper level disturbance that moved east from the Plains states, passing directly over the Lower Ohio Valley early on the 30th.

In many places, the Jan. 29-30 snowstorm was the biggest since the infamous pre-Christmas snowstorm in 2004.

  • The preliminary snowfall total at the National Weather Service office in Paducah was 4.7 inches, making this the biggest single-event snowfall since Dec., 2004. The second highest snow total since then is now 3.6 inches on Feb. 18, 2006. The 14.2 inches on Dec. 22-23, 2004 stands as the record at Paducah.
  • At Evansville, the preliminary total for Jan. 29-30 is 6.0 inches. This is the largest snowfall there since Dec. 22-23, 2004, when the record of 22.3 inches was set.

As shown by the map below, most locations received 4 to 6 inches of snow, except 6 to 10 inches over most of southeast Missouri. The narrow corridor of 6 to 8 inches over southern Illinois and southwest Indiana marks the location where a band of heavier snow became established through much of the night.
