A bow echo raced east across parts of southeast Missouri, southern Illinois, western Kentucky, and southwest Indiana on Tuesday evening (April 19).

The concentrations of greatest damage appear to have been in southern Illinois, especially in the Rend Lake area, Franklin County, and portions of Gallatin, White, and Wabash Counties. Pockets of major damage extended east across southwest Indiana. Isolated tornadoes occurred, a couple of which were rated EF-2.

  • Damage surveys were conducted in Wabash, White, and Gallatin Counties in southern Illinois as well as Bollinger County, Missouri. Tornado tracks have been identified in Bollinger, White, and Wabash Counties.
  • Peak winds at official reporting sites were measured from 65 to 80 mph. At the Evansville airport, the peak wind gust was 76 mph. A gust to 67 mph was measured at the Carbondale airport.
  • As is the case with most bow echoes, the vast majority of damage appears to be from straight-line winds. However, some of the most intense damage was associated with EF-2 tornadoes. Surveys were conducted Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday to determine if tornadoes were embedded within the larger area of wind damage.

Preliminary damage surveys were conducted in Bollinger County, Missouri and Gallatin County, Illinois on Wednesday, White County, IL on Thursday, and Wabash County on Friday.

View the survey for the EF-2 tornado and downburst in White County. View Bollinger County damage survey results below. The survey in Gallatin County revealed 90 mph thunderstorm winds, mainly from 3 miles north-northwest of Ridgway to New Haven. View Gallatin County survey results.
