The remnants of IKE brought strong and damaging winds to southeast Missouri, southern Illinois, southwest Indiana and western Kentucky Sunday morning. Numerous reports of wind gusts 50 to nearly 80 mph were received from Trained Spotters and Emergency Management officials.

The following impact statements were obtained from media reports and emergency managers:

  • There were many reports of widespread tree damage, trees down, power lines down, roof damage and mobile home damage.
  • A State of Emergency declaration was requested by several western Kentucky counties.
  • Several counties in far western Kentucky reported 50 to 100 buildings damaged per county.
  • From 50 to 75 percent of Carlisle County was reported to be still out of power on Tuesday.
  • While some injuries were reported (at least 23), there were no known fatalities. Seventeen of the injuries occurred in Hopkins County, KY.
  • Shelters were opened in a few counties for those without power.

The following graphic is based on the list of unofficial measured wind gusts reported to the NWS Paducah office that follows below the graphic.

wind gust map for 9/14/08

  • 78 mph at Grand Rivers, KY (barge loading facility on KY Lake)
  • 75 mph at Calvert City, KY (off-duty NWS employee)
  • 73 mph at Owensboro (emergency management)
  • 67 mph at Cairo, IL (emergency management)
  • 67 mph at Madisonville, KY (emergency management office)
  • 66 mph at Poplar Bluff, MO (airport ASOS)
  • 66 mph about 6 mi. southwest of Greenville, KY (handheld anemometer)
  • 64 mph at Evansville, IN (airport ASOS)
  • 64 mph in northwest corner of Christian Co., KY (handheld anemometer)
  • 62 mph at Bardwell, KY (sustained for 15 minutes)
  • 61 mph at Carbondale, IL (airport ASOS)

Though very little rainfall occurred in western Kentucky and southeast Missouri, another round of heavy rain occurred further north across Illinois and Missouri. The heavy rain from the remnants of Gustav and Ike in those areas could result in major flooding on the Mississippi River as far south as Cape Girardeau, MO.

The low pressure center that was the remnant of Ike raced northeast at 40 to 50 mph across Missouri and Illinois. The center passed between Carbondale and St. Louis on its way toward the northeastern states. The speed of the low pressure system contributed to the high wind event that raked our region.

An unofficial plot of preliminary storm reports from across the region is available below.

Picture below shows KPAH WSR-88D base velocity data valid around 8:00 a.m. 9/14/2008 (Sunday morning) as the remnants of Ike was passing just north and west of the region.

Below is a four-panel satellite image of the remnants of Ike. Each panel shows a different type of satellite image, but all four were taken at 7:45 A.M. CDT. The low pressure center that was the remnant of Ike was centered southeast of St. Louis. Strong south to southwest winds were affecting the Lower Ohio Valley and southeast Missouri. The upper right image is annotated with the location of the low pressure center and the circulation around it.
