Severe Storms and Isolated Tornado on April 12, 2005

  • Scattered thunderstorms developed during the late morning of April 12. View the Severe Thunderstorm Watch issued by the Storm Prediction Center. During the afternoon, some of the storms produced copious amounts of hail, especially from the Cape Girardeau, Missouri area northeast to the Marion/Carbondale area of southern Illinois. A number of reports of dime to quarter-size hail were received.

  • During the afternoon, a few funnel clouds were observed in southeast Missouri and southern Illinois, and a flash flood occurred in central Cape Girardeau County, Missouri. Hubble Creek in Jackson rose well out of its banks, rising over a footbridge and inundating a park.

  • During the early evening, an isolated severe storm moved east along the Jefferson/Franklin County line in southern Illinois. This storm generated a short-lived tornado that was documented on videotape near Rend Lake. No significant damage occurred with this tornado.
