OUR RECENT BOUT WITH OLD MAN WINTER HAS SET A NUMBER OF RECORDS. 
ALONG THE AXIS OF HEAVIEST SNOW...WHICH WAS ROUGHLY ALONG THE OHIO 
RIVER...THIS WAS UNPRECEDENTED FOR A SINGLE EVENT. THE 22.3 INCH 
TOTAL MEASURED AT EVANSVILLE ECLIPSED ALL RECORDS FOR A SINGLE STORM 
TOTAL. THE SNOW WAS ACCOMPANIED BY THUNDER AT TIMES IN THE 
EVANSVILLE AREA...WHICH CONTRIBUTED TO ISOLATED HIGHER TOTALS. HERE 
ARE SOME FACTS THAT PUT THIS SNOWSTORM IN PERSPECTIVE...

THE EVANSVILLE SNOW TOTAL OF 22.3 INCHES...

...WAS ABOUT ONE AND A HALF TIMES THE AVERAGE SEASONAL SNOWFALL OF 
14.2 INCHES.

...BROUGHT THE MONTHLY SNOWFALL TO THE HIGHEST FOR ANY DECEMBER 
SINCE 1917 AND THE SECOND HIGHEST FOR ANY DECEMBER ON RECORD BACK TO 
1897.

...MADE THIS MONTH THE THIRD SNOWIEST MONTH ON RECORD. ONLY JANUARY 
OF 1918 /41 INCHES/ AND DECEMBER OF 1917 /25.1 INCHES/ WERE SNOWIER. 
JANUARY OF 1977 WAS CLOSE...WITH 21.3 INCHES.

...MADE THIS THE WHITEST CHRISTMAS IN AVAILABLE RECORDS /SINCE 
1948/. THE SNOW DEPTH THIS CHRISTMAS MORNING WAS 11 INCHES.

THE PADUCAH SNOW TOTAL OF 14.2 INCHES...

...WAS THE HIGHEST SINGLE EVENT TOTAL ON RECORD...SURPASSING THE 
12.2 INCH TOTAL IN A JANUARY 1978 STORM.

...EXCEEDED THE AVERAGE SEASONAL SNOWFALL OF 10.2 INCHES.

...MADE THIS THE SNOWIEST DECEMBER ON RECORD.

...MADE THIS MONTH THE SNOWIEST SINCE FEBRUARY OF 1993...WHEN TWO 
SEPARATE 7 TO 8 INCH SNOWFALLS OCCURRED ON THE 15TH AND 25TH.

...COINCIDED WITH THE MEDIAN DATE /DECEMBER 22/ OF THE FIRST 
MEASURABLE SNOW AT PADUCAH.
    
EXTREME COLD FOLLOWED THE SNOW...WITH RECORD LOWS ON CHRISTMAS 
MORNING AT BOTH PADUCAH AND EVANSVILLE. THE LOW AT 
EVANSVILLE WAS MINUS 11...AND AT PADUCAH MINUS 8.

THE LOW OF MINUS 11 AT EVANSVILLE...

...FELL 4 DEGREES SHY OF THE COLDEST TEMPERATURE FOR ANY DAY IN 
DECEMBER...WHICH OCCURRED ON DEC. 22 1989.

...WAS THE COLDEST TEMPERATURE SINCE JANUARY 19 1994...WHEN THE LOW 
WAS MINUS 17.

THE LOW OF MINUS 8 AT PADUCAH...

...FELL TWO DEGREES SHY OF THE COLDEST TEMPERATURE FOR ANY DAY IN 
DECEMBER...WHICH OCCURRED ON DEC. 22 1989.

...WAS THE COLDEST TEMPERATURE SINCE JANUARY 19 1994...WHEN THE LOW
